After a break-in

A short honest guide

After a break-in, in order

A break-in leaves you shaken. This is the order to do things in, from making sure everyone is safe to making the door secure tonight.

Step by step

What to do, and when

  1. 1

    Make sure everyone is safe

If someone may still be inside, or anyone is hurt, call 999 first. Wait somewhere safe until it is clear.

  2. 2

    Report it to the police

Call 101 to report the break-in and ask for a crime reference number. Your insurer will need it.

  3. 3

    Photograph the damage

Before you tidy, take photos of the door, the lock, and anything moved. It helps the police and your claim.

  4. 4

    Call your insurer

Ask what your policy covers and whether they want you to use a particular locksmith. Some do.

  5. 5

    Make the property secure

Call us. We board up a broken door or fit new locks the same day, so your home is closed up tonight.

  6. 6

    Put the door right

Once things settle, replace what was forced. A British Standard deadlock and a checked frame set it right.

What we can do tonight

You should not have to sleep behind a door that will not lock. We carry boarding, locks, and uPVC parts on the van, so most doors can be made secure on the first visit.

If a full repair needs a part we do not have, we secure the door tonight and come back to finish it. You are never left with an open house.
